How Kristy Wu’s Celebrating Lunar New Year 2021

The lunar new year is a time full of celebrations and spending time with family and friends. Food is abundant and it’s a time where everyone wears their best outfits; it represents a fresh beginning, promises for a year full of luck and prosperity and bright colours, bold prints and gold jewellery is embraced.

Red is the go-to colour because it symbolises wealth and good fortune and all black or white is usually avoided, but if you aren’t one to usually wear bright colours, a red lip, or statement accessory does the trick. In the days leading up to the Lunar New Year, decluttering and cleaning isn’t just done around the house, but also applies to your clothes, which is why a lot of people buy new clothes during this time.

In the past I’ve worn black dresses with a red lip and lots of gold jewellery, sneakers with red details, but this year I am gravitating towards bold prints, deep reds/browns and cream colours.

I think it’s very important to keep a fresh and modern take on celebrating the New Year. While my family’s culture is imbued with tradition and symbolism, those belonging to the younger generations (like me) are experts at cleverly mixing the old and the new, the customary and the modern.

Just like mixing the traditional with the contemporary, I get really excited about mixing the high and low when it comes to dressing for New Year events. While many of the celebrations emphasise wealth, prosperity and abundance, it is normal to mix the high and the low when dressing for the festivities. Some of my go-to brands when shopping for the Lunar New Year are accessible label Glassons, items from The Iconic and even sustainable label Reformation. I love a touch of luxury when it comes to accessories, so usually opt for a designer pair of heels or clutch (loving Bottega Vaneta and Dion Lee at the moment)
