Everything Mod: Unpacking the Palm Royale Aesthetic
Everything was better in the sixties. Here's how to dive head first into the technicolour and chic Palm Beach aesthetic from 1969, inspired by the recent Apple TV series, 'Palm Royale'.
Last month, Apple TV+ released the highly anticipated Palm Royale, a series loosely based on the 2018 novel Mr. & Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel. The series features Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, Allison Janney and Kaia Gerber, among a bevy of other major names, following the plot of the protagonist trying to crack Palm Beach’s high society in the 60’s.
While the plot line is vivacious, bright and hilarious, (how could it not be with starring Kristen Wiig?!), we’re here to talk costume AKA the inspired fashion sweeping across the screen.
The sherbet coloured world of 1960’s in Florida’s Palm Beach is an explosion of Pucci, oversized sunglasses and everything fabulous and mod. Think Slim Aarons, poolside, cocktails and frocks, also known as, our heaven.
The costume designer of the series is Alix Friedberg, who not only crushed the task, but leaves you inspired to buy a ticket to Miami back in 1969 to be able to part take, with every episode you watch. Now, whilst we can’t travel back in time, we can adorn our wardrobes and our bodies with the ‘Palm Royale’ aesthetic. Here’s how;
The 1960s-era fashion is typically associated with the likes of Twiggy, shift dresses, headwear, psychedelic patterns and prints. Thankfully, some of the design houses responsible for these past trends, still exist today.
Pucci continues to provide their iconic swirly, colourful and inspired silk goodies, which will instantly make you feel like you belong sitting by the pools of Palm Beach’s high society. These pleated jersey flared pants, available at NET-A-PORTER, are exceptionally fabulous.
If you’re going Palm Royale, you’ve got to go BIG with your sunglasses. The likes of Saint Laurent, Celine and Oliver Peoples have you covered, here!
So ladies, grab your cover up, don your hat and sink into the colourful ode to Miami in the 1960’s with this Palm Royale-inspired edit!
