The New ‘Ugly Sandal’ Trend Taking the Fashion World by Storm
How the ugly sandal became the 'it shoe' of summer
Luxury brands have taken note that when it comes to summer footwear, comfort is key. The good old-fashioned Teva and Birkenstock styled sandals have served as inspiration and have been spotted on the runway at Chanel, Fendi and Loewe.

Slip On
It wasn’t long ago, Birkenstocks were dreaded in the fashion world passed off as simply too ugly to look good, but like any good trend, they divided the crowd and sparked conversation enter the ugly sandal trend.
Today, anything deemed ugly in the world of sandals quickly finds its way to our cart.
The style has cemented its place in our wardrobes, due to its ease of styling and extreme comfort, there is no turning back now, we’ve worn them in, and they are here to stay.
The slip-on style has been adopted by many a designer with most brands having their own version to the chunky style.
So, since it’s inevitable that with warmer and sunnier days you’ll soon find yourself perusing the pages of your favourite stores hunting for the latest slip-on, we’ve thought ahead and rounded up some of our favourites.
Buckle Up
When it comes to summer footwear, the classic buckle wielding sandal, historically may not have been our first choice.
But this trusty summer accessory has undergone a modern makeover over the last few seasons, reimagined by designers from high to low.
The addition of platform soles, more significant or more avantgarde looking straps and thankfully more robust buckles make buckle secured sandals a must for any summer wardrobe.
And of course, with chunkier soles, comes extra support and added comfort. And boy do we need it, after months of donning our finest slippers the journey to appropriate outdoor footwear needs to be slow and gentle (no blisters thankyou).
Stick Together
Velcro sandals returned to the zeitgeist last year with Teva’s signature black style.
Previously reserved for the ultra-outdoorsy, the style was quickly adopted by tastemakers on a global scale seeing the shoes paired with tea dresses, slips, miniskirts and tailored shorts.
It didn’t take long for designers to add their own interpretation of the shoes to the market, resulting in hundreds of unique velcro reliant sandals to choose from.
There is no doubt we will be reaching for this new classic for years to come.
While the basic style is pretty similar, there’s an abundance of stylistic differences making it easy to add a little spice to your summer styling.
From quilting to leather or canvas, low to platform, bold to neutral the possibilities are nearly endless. Whether you like your sandals to be a statement or let your clothes do the talking, the velcro sandal trend leaves it up to you with no need to compromise on comfort or style.
