Soccer Fanatic or Not, Blokecore is Still on the Ball

Wear Your Colours on Your Sleeve. Transitioning from sportswear to TikTok fashion statement in mid 2022, the soccer jersey aesthetic has held onto its spot at the top of the table, well into 2024. Inspired by the laddish sports fans of the 80’s, Blokecore isn’t just a look; it’s a commitment to the bit.

What has been labelled online as “Blokecore”, began its rise to popularity almost two years ago, and the trend is by no means at risk of relegation. Initially defined by its blending of vintage replica soccer jerseys with the more everyday clothing items such as baggy or straight-leg jeans and Adidas Sambas, the trend has evolved over the years to include all aspects of the sport-casual look.

Whether serendipitously or not, it has coincided with a wave of Aussies rediscovering their obsession with soccer. The Matilda’s Women’s World Cup campaign in 2023 saw, what felt like, the entire country don the national colours and dust off their footy boots in response to a string of incredible matches of the World Games. And with the boots, came the jerseys too. From the sidelines to the sidewalks, soccer jerseys were out in full force; and along with it, the sense of pride in wearing your colours on your sleeve.

Dua Lipa has also been captured sporting the Blokecore look, joining Manchester City midfielder, Jack Grealish in Puma’s Forever Palermo campaign. Citing the effortless Italian style philosophy as the backbone of the campaign, Puma’s Palermo is best complimented by the daggy denim and bold colourways of soccer jerseys and outerwear.

Blokecore is exactly that – effortless. By taking on the persona of the 80’s football fanatic lads and dads, you’re essentially telling the world that you’re not trying too hard at all. And maybe that’s why it’s standing the test of time. In an era of fast fashion and fading trends, Blokecore exudes heritage, unashamed confidence, and commitment to your colours.
