Recreating Tyler the Creators Iconic Style

Odd Future: how rapper & producer Tyler Gregory Okonma’s style has evolved, and why we love it so much.

If you’re a Millennial or Gen Z, chances are you know who Tyler the Creator is, AKA Tyler Gregory Okonma, for his unique rapping sound, being a founding member of group Odd Future (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All or OFWGKTA), or his electric way of dressing.

After a recent Australian Tour that made headlines throughout our local pop-culture news cycle, we were inspired to deep dive into the evolution of Tyler’s style since his big break being a founding member of Odd Future in 2007.

At the ripe age of 12 Tyler released his very first mixtape ‘Bastard’, which propelled his horrorcore-influenced sound and violent, transgressive lyrical content to worldwide attention. Having gained such influence and the attention of the world at such a ripe young age meant Tyler was afforded to launch his successful streetwear label ‘Golf Wang; soon thereafter.

Whether it was his controversial lyrics, colourful streetwear merchandise selling out or zany personal style, by 2012 Tyler was an icon turning heads for a multitude of reasons.

His personal style could be described as preppy, eclectic, skater and golf? Often spotted wearing a fluffy ‘teenage dirtbag’ hat, pair of Dr Marten loafers and some nod to golf, if there is one thing his aesthetic is, it’s unique.

Veering so far from the conventional ‘rapper’ style of edgy blacks, diamonds and gold and an amount of designer that is edging on obnoxious, we wholeheartedly appreciate Tyler’s preppy, considered and colourful sense of style that sets him apart.

If you’re looking to recreate an iconic Tyler look in support of his style we recommend investing in a pair of loafers or classic skater shoes like Vans, or Converse Chuck Taylors, a pair of Dickies, a vest of some sort, a kooky pair of shades and of course, a hat to top it off (will accept bucket, cap or fluffy). Oh, and most importantly, make sure colour is dialled up to the max.
