Ben Sherman Brand

The Ben Sherman brand is the stuff of legend. Born Arthur Ben Sherman in 1925, he immigrated to America where he raised his children and worked for his father-in-laws successful clothing manufacturing company. Arthur changed his name to Ben in the US but the ‘passionate businessman with an artists soul’ eventually relocated to Brighton and set up a manufacturing. In 1963 Ben Sherman designed and manufactured shirts were officially born – and so were The Modernists. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect for the brand as it was swept up in the new wave of fashion and music of the swinging 60s in Britain. So popular were the shirts it’s famously quoted that in1970 Ben ordered a million yards of oxford cloth, a quarter of a million of gingham fabric and a quarter of a million yards of colourful striped material from his American fabric mill. Ben may have passed away in Australia in the late 1980s but his legacy endures in iconic proportions. To this day the classic design - influenced by American Ivy League with the bespoke back hook and button on the back of the collar – remains a unique and sought after garment.
