Why the Chunky Loafer Will Be Your Go-To Shoe this Year

Words By Eleanor Wilson

The humble, classy loafer has received a grunge upgrade this season, and we’re ready to rule the streets in platform style. Here’s how to style the chunky loafer, budget inclusive.

Luxe

Whether they’re poking through floor sweeping pants or embraced by knee high socks and short cut dresses, chunky loafers are taking up major foot-space right now. Thrust onto the 2021 shoe-wear scene via Prada’s dreamy Logo Loafer, the low-cut shoe style is characterised in shiny leather by its platform treaded sole and classic snaffle detail.

While the Prada Loafer has had the fashion world in a frenzy over its patent black exterior and definitive steel triangle logo, Gucci’s own loafer proves to be the OG in the shoe stakes.

For our Luxe look, we’re keeping it in the family by pairing the luxury brand’s iconic Lug sole loafers with their Gucci ‘GG’ patterned tights. This look boasts the trans-seasonality of the loafer, which slides into a summer wardrobe with ease when paired alongside tights, jewellery and leather accessories.

We chose a crisp white poplin shirt dress to keep things casual while maintaining some structure, making a perfect base for this muted blue oversized pinstripe Blazer from Acne Studios.

They say style is in the details, which is why we’ve channelled the gold hardware details on the Gucci loafers with a gold chain necklace from Sophie Buhai. Premium black leather isn’t going anywhere, either. We chose this Burrow-22 Shoulder Bag from Off-White’s latest, rebranded collection to highlight the Italian leather shoes.

Less

The contemporary lovechild of the classic creeper and vintage loafer, the chunky loafer has a punk-scene aura, with refined manners. And with a styling versatility to fit any season or occasion, we think the loafer could just overtake the timeless combat boot as the ideal winter shoe this year.

Social media Influencers Matilda Djerf and Pernille Teisbaek have also been busy making a case for the stylish shoe, with their Scandi-chic Instagram feeds providing an endless supply of loafer-loving outfit inspiration. Seemingly always clutching a fresh bouquet, longline coats have become a defining staple for the pair, marking our ‘Less’ category as an ode to the beloved IG muses.
A longline coat, like this bold black leather one from Swedish brand Stand Studio, is another great opportunity to break out the loafers in the colder months. This pair of Ganni loafers are optimised in patent black, croc-embossed glory, for a trendy twist on the classic shoe.

The outfit comes to life thanks to a rich gold-ochre toned long-sleeved midi dress from Holzweiler, which is coupled with chunky gold hoops for an opulent finish. Match your socks with a baguette shoulder bag for a classic off-duty model vibe, and style your hair in a braid to finish the look.

Low

Who says loafers need to blow your budget? Our most economical loafer option flaunts fringe detail, a moc toe and trademark lugged sole to have you stomping through the streets in style. We couldn’t create a loafer feature without styling them with a pair of elongating, wide legged pants. This vesper pair flaunts a streamline mid-seam for a tailored look, teasing a glimpse of the illustrious loafer under the floor-length pant. Mossy green is yet another tone bursting onto the fashion scene this year, and the combination of this khaki leather shacket and Anaii green dial mesh watch give outfit coordination a whole new meaning.

The loafer suit pant combination is a look favoured not only on the street, but on the red carpet too. Earlier this month, singer extraordinaire Billie Eilish, rocked a pair of white chunky loafers to accompany her patterned co-Ord suit look suit look at the 2021 Grammy Awards. Amongst a sea of towering heels, likely chaperoned by collateral aches and blisters, we think Billie is onto something with her red-carpet event shoe choice. The chunky feature of this season’s fashion fix not only look good, but they allow you to keep a couple of inches of height, without the painful aftermath. Genius, right? We, for one, are certainly looking forward to hours of fashionable galivanting in both style, and comfort.
