The Sueded Man

Here's how to successfully integrate suede into your wardrobe.

Leather’s softer, textural sister is a brushed iteration called suede. While historically associated with the older gentleman, we’re here to prove that this luxurious arm of leather is perfect for the modern man. Whether centring an outfit around a suede jacket or opting for lighter touches, here are our picks when it comes to adding shades of suede this season, according to desired investment amount.

Luxe

For the fancy-leaning fashionista, suede should already be in your vocab as a luxurious and textural touch to your signature look.

Often used for luxe hints in accessories, suede is a soft choice when it comes to skin-touching garments like watches, shoes and gloves.

A common use for this type of leather in high-end footwear is the loafer. Due to sueded leather becoming super soft and wearing well, this shoe silhouette is the perfect (and comfy) way to ease yourself into this fabrication.

In an effort to modernise a look featuring super traditional items like a suede loafer and glove, we recommend the addition of a hoodie and slouchy pants. This elasticised waist, cropped wool trousers from contemporary brand Marni are the perfect way to balance out the otherwise very serious and sophisticated shoes and blazer.

And please don’t be put off on suede footwear due to water damage. Between leather protector, suede shampoo and your meticulous care with investment footwear, you’ll manage perfectly.

For a sportier look incorporating our new-found suede obsession, we recommend going for some sneakers that hero the material. Brands such as New Balance, Common Projects and Adidas all create iterations of their signature styles in a range of suede shades. Some really fun colour combos too!

Moving up the body we are very excited to find a modern place for the Moleskin pant. While not actually created from leather, this brushed cotton twill has the hand feel of suede and has been a staple fabrication for R.M Williams since the 1940’s. The closest thing to an affordable suede pant and we’re here for it!

Top a sporty look off with an accessory with hints of our brushed leather. A satchel, messenger bag or backpack like this JanSport number is a considered way to reintegrate this texture in your look once again.

We’re here to declare that the budget-inclined shopper need not stray away from this historically posh fabrication!
Thankfully our street and sportswear brands have our backs when it comes to providing the high-street interpretations of suede goodies.

Sneakers are again an obvious choice, but headwear is also an inexpensive way to get your hands on some suede goodness.
This snapback cap from ONEBYONE is the perfect example of a very accessible touch of suede. Just like footwear, the wearing on these accessories are one of the best-selling-factors of this type of leather. Expect the garments to mould and adjust perfectly to your body’s shape.

When it comes to the suede jacket, this investment option may be a little on the pricier side but we have a little trick up our (suede) sleeve for you budget-conscious shoppers.
At the end of season, you will always find a suede outerwear piece on sale, almost guaranteed.
