The Shacket Trend & How to Style It

The hybrid outerwear piece you’ll be wearing all-year-round.

It’s the androgynous, transeasonal outerwear piece taking the fashion world by storm, and the shacket is proving its status as the most versatile staple piece since the handbag. Bridging the gap between seasons in both comfort, and style, here’s three different ways to style the shacket, at three different price points. Characterised by an oversized fit, utilitarian flap pockets, button closures and a classic shirt collar, before it recently picked up momentum on the women’s fashion scene, the shacket was predominantly marketed as a men's outerwear staple. Today, we see an abundant range of designs versatile in fabric, pattern and styles. Be it a cozy wool shacket, buttery leather version or classic cotton-blend style, there is a style to suit everyone’s tastes.

LUXE: LEATHER LUXURY

We’re all over the oversized blazer, and we loved the knitted vest trend, but we think it’s time to shine a spotlight on the love child of the oversized shirt and utility jacket.

The shacket is often regarded as a lightweight version of your typical winter jacket, and for the colder months, shackets provide the perfect layering opportunity to peer out from under warmer coats and puffers.

The most lavish of our shacket categories, the ‘Luxe’ outfit is styled for the fashion lover who likes to flaunt a bit of leg. Supple leather ties the outfit together with the Ludovic de Saint Sernin mini skirt, while these Bottega Veneta Chelsea Boots cut at the ankles for maximum leg elongation.

The leather memo continues with the new season Hourglass Shoulder Bag from Balenciaga, which includes a croc embossed finish to add further dimension to the look. To inject some flair into an otherwise monochromatic look, the Marques Almeida mesh shirt provides a bright flash of orange blended on a black canvas. The combination of these dark toned pieces provide the perfect backdrop for our shacket to shine. In an oversized cut, the crisp cotton blend jacket is a robust, structured take on your classic oversized shirt dress, resulting in a positively badass outfit.

LESS: FEMININE FLAIR

Along with fashion fanatics, designers are lapping up the shacket trend with a range of innovative styles.  Nanushka regularly showers us with shacket designs using their trademark buttery vegan leather, while Isabel Marant Étoile gives us a plethora of checked wool editions, cementing the shacket as a timeless women’s wardrobe staple.

Derived from the men’s fashion scene, you may think the shacket is a typically androgynous wardrobe piece. But while it may seem like an unlikely pairing, complementing an androgynous shacket with a feminine pleated skirt and pointed-toe boot may be one of the most stylish and original ways to wear the trend.

For this style, we’ve channelled one of the most prominent shacket styles, with this check printed shacket from Forever New. Adding a pleated skirt in a complimentary tone, like this neutral-hued one from Aere, makes for a harmonious balance of casual chic, and a monochromatic turtleneck helps to balance the neutral colour palette. From there, the ‘Less’ look can easily be dressed up, with a pair of pointed boots, or dressed down, with some basic canvas sneakers like these from Primury. Add a complementary pair of sunnies- this season we’re loving sheer acetate adaptations like these from Lu Goldie, and onlookers are sure to be impressed by this innovative way to style the trend.

LOW: CLASSICALLY CASUAL

On the street style scene, the trend has been a go-to casual look for stylish celebrities throughout the pandemic. Supermodels Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner have both taken a liking to the trend, often styling their jackets with straight leg pants and sneakers, or Dr Martens.

We’re taking inspiration from the celeb duo for our ‘Low’ look- putting emphasis on comfort, with an off-duty model vibe. We’re throwing the shacket back to its varsity jacket roots, with a black nylon, slouch-fit jacket.

A tight fitted tank brings structure and silhouette to the oversized fit of the shacket, and coffee-toned wide leg pants will put extra emphasis on a cinched waistline. Accessorising is the key to giving this look an effortless yet sophisticated style and there’s no easier way to do so than with some chunky gold hoops and a hair accessory. We love the headscarf trend right now, and think this satin monogram one adds texture and dimension to an otherwise relaxed look.
