The Accessories We’ll Be Seeing On the Streets of Fashion Month

Noughties inspired women’s accessories we can’t get enough of at the moment.

The Y2K movement is well and truly back to stay and to slay. Here are 5 different nostalgic trends we’re seeing women all over the world re-embracing.

Words By Brittany Lyons

Oversized Pendant Necklaces

Nestled somewhere between grunge, punk and style associated with the turn of the millennia, oversized pendant necklaces reign supreme. These kind of ironic but mostly iconic pieces are the chunky and statement pieces that perfectly compliment an outfit with a humble nod to the era of tacky.

Nostalgic to the early 2000’s where the likes of Avril Lavine, Hilary Duff and Paris Hilton adorned their necks with the style, these cutesy accessories are back and we’re not mad about it. Usually connected to a thick chain, these necklaces look perfect on their own, or layered with pieces that are lighter in hardware.

To truly pay homage to the classic oversized pendant necklace, we recommend looking for one with a statement charm in either a heart or star shape. This cubic zirconia incrusted iteration from Vetements is the perfect amount of ridiculousness and romantic that truly nails the trend.

If you’re less drawn to sparkle, we think the below option from Reliquia is the perfect boho version ‘Lupe Necklace’ that nails the trend in a more subtle way.

Adidas Sneakers

If you haven’t spent the last few weeks living under a rock, you’ll know the status that Adidas’ Samba Sneakers have reached in popular culture. Brought back (well we’d actually say propelled) to stardom thanks to the likes of Bella Hadid and Jacquie Alexander, these men’s indoor football shoes have us, hook, line and sinker.

Featuring the iconic three stripes synonymous with Adidas, these slender in shape shoes are sleek and practical all in one. Featuring a rubber sole, contrast details and slightly elongated tongue, these quite simply the perfect understated sneaker. For us, we’re big fans of the white and grey colourway, but the all black iteration are also very, very good.

Due to their surge in popularity over the last few months, they’re harder to find than you’d think. If you’re unable to secure a pair in your size, we recommend instead investing in a pair of Gazelles or Busenitz, which are very similar in shape and style.

Whatever you land on, we’re sure the iconic three striped Adidas sneaker will not only stay in fashion for seasons to come but will cycle back to stardom for the rest of eternity. You really can’t go wrong with these.

Hobo Bags

The slouchy Hobo Bag is back in a big, big way.

Made popular in the early 2000’s boho era when style was slouchy, effortless and a bit messy, these bags were the perfect addition to carry your essentials, which back then was probably a Sony Walkman, Nokia Phone and Tamagotchi.

Identifiable by it’s slouchy and malleable shape, under arm positioning and usually in an oversized size, just like the trend, these bags seriously get better with age. Typically crafted from a foldy leather or nylon, you’ll know a hobo bag when you see one.

Whilst the name ‘Hobo’ truly hasn’t aged well, it’s clear that that the slouchiness of the original has. We’re big fans of this practical and carry-all shape and we’re so excited to see luxury brands such as Balenciaga honour the trend.

Some of our favourite trend-based labels have too embraced the Hobo Bag trend, with more affordable iterations from Ganni and Public Desire making buying into the trend and easy and stylish option.

Speed Dealer Sunglasses

Known as ‘Speed Dealers’ here in Australia and more commonly referred to as Wrap Sunglasses everywhere else, this particular shape of eyewear is often associated with bike riders and professional athletes.

What you might not remember is that these sunglasses were actually very big in the 2000’s. Brands like Oakley were popularise a couple of decades ago thanks to band members of Blink 182, Good Charlotte and Creed. If you weren’t already aware, Oakley are the OGs when it comes to these type of shades.

If you were unsure about the relevancy of these or whether they were a worthwhile investment, let us turn your attention to the latest Balenciaga Campaign led by none other than Kim Kardashian. You will notice these particular sunglasses shape remains on the hero imagery, signifying it’s here to stay for at least another season or two.

If you’re still not convinced, our tip would be to invest instead in a cheaper alternative like the iterations below from SZADE or Polaroid, to test whether you’ll wear them!

Hair Clips

Akin to the statement pendant necklaces above, the cutesy and feminine jewellery of the early 2000’s is a trend we keep seeing on the streets of the most fashionable metropolis’ in the world.

Transport yourself to the early noughties where Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie were the biggest names in Hollywood, wearing matching rhinestone studded velour tracksuits, what can you picture adorning their platinum locks? Hint it’s sparkly.

Embellished hair clips are making their way back onto the scene and the nostalgic little girl in us is absolutely for it! Thanks to Ballerina-Core and Y2K making a simultaneous comeback, we’re predicting hair clips are going to be big this fashion month.

Brands who have always done this well, namely Miu Miu and Gucci, are truly about to reap the rewards of committing to the cute hair clip trend. If you’re willing to try out the sparkly hair accessory trend without paying high-end prices, we recommend having a peep at retailers such as ASOS and The Iconic for clips that won’t break the bank.
