Luxe to Less: The Return of the Cardigan

A long-treasured knitted silhouette, is making a comeback. And for good reason.

Although consistently popular throughout history, the cardigan is well and truly having its moment again. All the way from high-end luxurious styles to affordable designs essential for everyday wearing, we’ve gathered some of our favourite on-trend cardigans for easy winter styling.

Invest in a plush knit style to last you for winters to come.

From premium cashmere to Australian merino wool, a knitted cardigan made from an intricately woven fabrication is the perfect way to stay warm and stylish throughout the season.

Masters in classic design, Loewe’s Intarsia-Knitted Cardigan is knitted from a cosy wool blend that’s soft to the touch and lightweight to wear, and a perfect way to dip your toe back into the cardigan game.

Featuring Loewe’s signature ‘Anagram’ emblem at the back, the modern intarsia style includes a contrasting bright blue trim around the neckline and button fastenings down the front of the design.

Pulling from the black tones from the knit, let the cardigan shine by pairing it with all black basics underneath.

For this, try Bottega Veneta’s Contrast-Stripe Track Pants and Dion Lee’s Black Slash Woven Turtleneck as a modern base layer.

Playing on the bright cobalt blue shade of the cardigan, layer this bright blue Alexander McQueen Logo-Print Puffer Gilet on top for cooler days, or
Off-White’s Cady Cut-Out Rectangular-Frame Sunglasses for when the sun is out.

Topping off the luxurious look with an added element of colour, but still keeping to the black monochrome theme, sling the Bottega Veneta Cassette Messenger Bag in black and green over your shoulder, and pull A Bathing Ape’s Bape Sta M2 Low-Top Sneakers on.

Finish with the Polite Worldwide Gold Pearl Necklace for a simple sparkle.

Get back to your roots with a tonal winter outfit revolving around a beautifully neutral cardigan.

No matter if you prefer to button it up, or leave it open, a well-priced cardigan has the versatility to be worn again and again in a variety of different ways.

Starting out with legendary French designer Jacquemus’s take on the classic knit with the Beige ‘Le Cardigan Limone’ Cardigan.

The cream-coloured nylon cotton blend has a thick ribbed texture and features a bright lemon-yellow trim around the hemline and cuffs.

With a deep Y-neck collar and button closure at the front, this long sleeve knit layers expertly over a bold shirt – like Séfr’s Soft Yellow Shirt for instance.

Adding to the neutral tones of the look, Norse Projects’ Beige Anderson Trousers would be ideal to keep the look classy, but still within budget.

Accessories are key when it comes to an all-neutral look.

Add Museum of Peace & Quiet’s Baseball Cap, Marni’s Multicolor Alpaca Stripe Scarf, Anderson’s Suede Belt and a Brown Pocket Pouch from Homme Plissé Issey Miyake for a fully functional coordinated look.

Tying back in with the yellow of the cardigan, finish with Noah’s Brown adidas Originals Edition Sneakers for a cohesive appeal that’s simple to pull together and easy on the eyes.

Shopping within a budget doesn’t have to mean forgoing style and class.

On the contrary, when it comes to high-quality knitwear, there’s a wide range of affordable options available for less than a pretty penny.

Australian surf and skate brand Thrills has you covered for a classic cardigan design with a comfy, relaxed shape that looks great on anybody.

The Pennyroyal Cardigan style is in deep emerald green and features two handy patch pockets at the front and tortoiseshell horn buttons that close the front of the design, or alternatively, look cool and casual left open.

Paired best with a tonal pair of pants, like the classic Dickie’s Original 874 Work Pant in a similar forest green is the perfect way to showcase the cardigan.

Following along with the green theme, pop on a matching accessory like Staple Superior’s Basic Beanie that will keep you feeling warm and looking put together.

Add a new complementary shade into the mix with this Reigning Champ Crewneck Cotton T-Shirt in a dusty brown and a pair of lighter brown New Balance Original 574.

To complete the winter-appropriate, effortlessly cool look, layer on the Dickies The Original 874 Tote Bag, Carhartt Wip Vista Tie-Dyed Socks and Serge Denimes’ Bounty Ring.
