Luxe to Less: Boxer Shorts and Button Downs

The boxer shorts and button-down trend that's taking leisurewear to a whole new level.

If you’re partial to taking over your boyfriend’s wardrobe, or love a matching tracksuit, this trend is for you. Where androgynous fashion meets leisurewear, a casual pair of cotton boxer shorts and a crisp button-down shirt is the fashion trend gearing up to rule our wardrobes in the warmer months. Here’s how to style the trend, three ways, for three budgets.

Words By Eleanor Wilson

Luxe

It’s the age-old question – boxers or briefs? Well, we have our minds firmly made up. With skirts and dresses filling up our summer wardrobes, shorts have taken a back seat on the trend scene over the past few seasons. But while the days of donning a pair of ripped denim shorts and a basic tee may be gone, boxer shorts are here to take their place.

Women’s fashion is undoubtedly thriving off androgyny at the moment, so we’re basing our high-end luxe look off the effortless style. As the weather is warming up or cooling down depending on where you’re reading from, a neutral oversized blazer provides both structure and extra warmth to these leisurely blue striped boxer shorts from Coperni.

We’re continuing our ode to traditional menswear by pairing the look with dad sneakers, and a classic blue button-down. You can choose to keep the shirt open, and pair it with a ribbed tank, or show a bit more skin by buttoning the two middle closures. Either way, our Luxe look provides a put together, off-duty model look, with items you can find in your own (boyfriend’s) closet!

Clockwise Left to Right:

Toteme Blue Wide Sleeve Shirt, $385, SSENSE
Skims Ribbed Stretch-cotton Tank Top, $62, Selfridges
Frankie Shop Isla Single-button Blazer, $552, Farfetch
Coperni Poplin Boxer Shorts, was $434 now $217, Farfetch
New Balance Grey Made In US 990 V5 Sneakers, $270, SSENSE

Less

The COVID-19 pandemic has seen our wardrobes infiltrated with a range of comfy, pseudo-pyjama styles, and the boxer shorts and button downtrend is proving the leisurewear trend is going nowhere fast (and we aren’t mad about it). At a modest, mid-range price tag, our less category allows us to experiment and inject some colour and fun into the style.

If last week’s Copenhagen Fashion Week is anything to go by, colour is ruling the runway at the moment, so we’re building our Less look around a striking pink button-down. We’re balancing the shirt’s bold hue with the classic white Anine Bing Liam Boxer shorts, and some timeless pearls to cement this look as a trend-packed style.

From there, you can choose to dress the look down with a printed baby tee and some casual sandals for a summer day out, or if you have nighttime plans, elevate the outfit with a pair of mules and a flattering bodysuit. Regardless, the trend is sure to bring life to your summer wardrobe in a refreshing style.

OMIGHTY SSENSE Exclusive White Print Cowgirl Baby Tank Top, $85, SSENSE
Marc Jacobs White ‘The Pearl’ Necklace, $225, SSENSE

Low

Inspired by the likes of indie fashion labels such as Paloma Wool and House of Sunny, sorbet pastel tones and checkered prints are two of the biggest fashion trends of the year. So if you love the eye-catching style, but don’t want to spend your whole paycheque on a more transient trend, our low section has you sorted.

This lime shaded gingham set from ASOS is coordination heaven, and can easily be styled to suit your personal fashion sense, whether that’s bold and colourful, or more classic and effortless. When it comes to styling a matching co-ord, accessorising is the key to transforming your pieces from a basic throw-on outfit to a seamlessly styled look.

Given this set is quite busy, we’ve chosen to pull the look together with neutral-toned pieces in a beige cap and quilted bag. But if you like to express your style through colour, the outfit remains flamboyant with an extra punch of colour in these layered chain necklaces from Nasty Gal. Add a flattering pair of sunnies, some rings and an eclectic nail design, and you’ll be the street style inspo of everyone!
