How to Achieve Hailey Bieber’s Glazed Donut Skin

Why ‘glazed donut’ skin is the trendiest thing to come out of the beauty world this season, and our take on the best ways to achieve it.

Even prior to launching her own skincare line ‘Rhode’ last month, Hailey Bieber propelled the phenomenon of ‘glazed donut skin’ to viral-TikTok level notoriety. Somewhere between dewy, glowy and glassy skin, glazed donut skin is the epitome of hydrated and glistening, here's how to get it. The result of a specific and considered night-time routine, here’s how we here at Monde are waking up looking like a Krispy Kreme.

Step 1: Cleanse & Exfoliate

We all know every good skincare regime starts off with a proper and considered cleanse.

If you’re a daily SPF (as you should be) and makeup wearer, we recommend going in and cleansing your skin twice. Why not kick off with an oil or balm cleanser to help melt any product residue present? We are big fans of Medik8’s Lipid Balance Cleansing Oil as it’s super nourishing, as well as Alpha-H’s Melting Moment Cleansing Balm which is amazing at getting rid of eye makeup. Remember to always apply an oil or balm cleanser to dry skin with dry hands. Follow up with your everyday gel or foaming cleanser and you’re ready for our next step!

The night before you’d like to awake looking like a glowy and glazed treat, we recommend following your usual double cleanse with a gentle exfoliating product. The use of an exfoliant will prep the skin adequately to soak up all the nourishment and hydration necessary to achieve the glazed look, and rid your surface of any unwanted debris. We’re fans of new brand Viviology’s, gentle yet effective Liquid Exfoliant.

Step 2: Hydrate Your Skin

One of the key characteristics of glazed donut skin is the high level of hydration and protection of the skin’s natural barrier. One of our favourite ways to maintain proper levels of hydration in the skin, is through the use of humectant, Hyaluronic Acid.

HA is a wonderful cosmeceutical ingredient which is a powerhouse when it comes to the improvement of hydration levels. With the ability to draw up to 1000x times its own weight in water, Hyaluronic Acid is one of the best ways to quench thirsty skin.

If you’re new to the HA game, we recommend kicking off your relationship with The Ordinary’s entry level serum which gives you a lot of bang for your buck. For 60ml of a highly concentrated Hyaluronic Acid serum for under $20, you’d be silly not to really!

For those who prefer their skincare products to do more, serums harnessing the power of HA plus ceramides, peptides and Niacinamide are a fabulous way to boost hydration as well as some anti-ageing benefits!

Step 3: Lock in Moisture

So, after you’ve applied a good serving of hydration thanks to our friend Hyaluronic Acid, it’s time to lock in with a moisturiser or occlusive.

If you’re privy to the concept of glazed donut skin, then chances are you’ll also be aware of yet another TikTok popularised phenomenon, ‘slugging’. Slugging has actually been around for years within the Korean beauty space and involves applying a layer of petroleum jelly (here is Australia we call it Vaseline) to the skin to help prevent water loss.

In the quest for glazed donut skin, we would recommend doing a variation of slugging, whereby you instead use a thick balm or moisturiser to help support your barrier.

Two go-to occlusive products that lock in hydration whilst maintaining water levels are K beauty brand Laneige’s Water Sleeping Mask, and on the drug-store price end, La Roche-Posay’s Cicaplast Baume B5 Balm. Both thick and balmy in consistency whilst full of nourishing and hydrating ingredients, these products will drip feed your skin goodness while you sleep.

Step 4: Nourish Your Skin & Yourself

Now, in a normal night-time routine you might think to wrap things up after your thick cream or moisturiser. In this instance, we don’t stop there. To obtain the juiciest, glazed donut skin that even Hailey Bieber would be impressed with, we’re going that extra step and adding in yet another layer of nourishment to the skin.

Face oils are a perfect way to gradually feed the skin overnight with hydration and antioxidants, not to mention they are one of the best ways to induce a luminous glow to your complexion.

Grab your favourite face oil, currently we’re loving this iteration from NZ based brand Emma Lewisham, and dab on a sizeable amount over the top of your ‘slugged’ face. We prefer to finish with an oil in the proceedings of skincare application as it’s usually the heaviest consistency and can interfere with the absorption of anything else applied over the top.

Next? It’s time for rest. Make sure you’re hydrated from the inside with lots of water before hitting the hay. Proper rest and water consumption are both important factors in achieving glazed donut skin.

Step 5: GLOW

Time to wake, sleeping glazed beauty! After all that hard work last night, we’re hoping you have risen to a skin that is happy, hydrated and plump! Now all that’s left to do it show it off.

The traditional way to wear glazed donut skin (says Mrs Bieber) is with very little makeup. After all, the look is about the appearance of your complexion and not about covering it up.

Some of the best ways to accentuate your glazed skin without going too heavy on cosmetic products is to choose ones that are lightweight and light reflecting.

An illuminating primer applied before a lightweight BB cream is a great way of maintaining that effortless skin look with added glow. Both iterations from M.A.C cosmetics below work brilliantly without having to need too much.

For an iconic glow that (we think) is yet to be properly duplicated by anything else, Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter is a must. Applied as a primer or under base highlighter, a touch of this to the high points of your face will be serving Krispy Crème Original Glazed in no time.
