Adopt the showstopping attires from Met Gala 2021

Appreciated for its extravagant and utterly outrageous fashions, the 2021 Met Gala certainly lived up to its high and (over-the-top) expectations. After last year’s covid-induced hiatus it seems everyone was in desperate need for a Met Gala. Held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Monday night’s theme galvanised A-listers to don their best outfit under the theme, ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’. Whilst there were obvious standouts, we loved the subdued homage and hints to American designers and culture. Shop our curated selection of glamourous Gala ensembles to draw outfit inspiration from.

Words By Ellen Madden

Lupita Nyong’o

With a nod to denim jeans and their deeply rooted American origins, Lupita Nyong’o wore a denim floor length Versace gown.

The number sported stitched denim panels sweeping into a structured bodice, beaded bust detailing travelling down to the floor and a denim train.

It’s safe to say Nyong’o absolutely understood the assignment!

REMAIN Birger Christensen created the most exquisite and versatile denim dress called, ‘The Edinisa’ made entirely from a rigid blue denim, featuring puffed sleeves, a midi length finish and emphasized vertical seams – similar to Nyong’o’s ensemble.

If a denim dress is too much denim, opt for a midi skirt.

MM6 Maison Margiela’s Indigo Denim Skirt is undeniably striking considering the central vent split featuring a raw edge and the striking A-line cut.

To imitate the hint of metallic beading on the Versace gown, pair ASOS DESIGN’s Isla Velvet Glitter Bra with a high-waisted skirt or under a strapless dress, top or a sheer shirt.

Lily-Rose Depp

Lily Rose Depp is recognised for fearlessly pulling off daring gowns and attires at various Met Galas. Of course, she makes anything, and everything look ever so chic!

This year she wore a pink and black glittering two piece featuring a low-rise belted midi skirt and a cropped tube top finished with a pair of black pumps.

Phillipp Plein’s logo-embellished strapless top is a fitting homage to Chanel Coutures tube top. Created from a faux-patent leather the top sports a focal crystal embellishment and a cropped length.

We are here for the low waisted skirt trend that Depp pulls off so effortlessly.

Renaissance Renaissance’s Pleated Taffeta Midi skirt is designed to be worn below the waist and finished just below the shin. It has a wrap front and side tie details’s so it could be worn either above or below the hip bone.

If low-waisted is a source of distress, opt for a high waisted skirt – the versatility is certainly appreciated.

Ganni’s Poplin Wavy Midi Skirt has an elasticated waist, an asymmetrical hem and a matching pink top to channel your inner Lily-Rose Depp.

Ella Emhoff

Up and coming model, stepdaughter of the United States’ Vice President and emerging fashion designer, Ella Emhoff, certainly left an impression at this year’s Met Gala.

She sported a scarlet red, monochromatic casual outfit, in what can be recognised as a salute to American streetwear.

Street style was born out of New York’s Hip Hop Culture in the 1970’s and 1980’s. The effortless aesthetic is both practical and comfortable with inclusion of sweat sets, jeans, sneakers and graphic tees.

Emhoff was dressed by Stella McCartney – wearing billowing oversized red pants, a sheer glittering long sleeve, red sneakers, and a matching clutch.

To imitate the red from head-to-toe, The Attico’s Stretch-Knit Maxi Dress in red is the most fitting alternative, with long cuffed sleeves, a loose high neck and its floor length finish.

We love the look of red sneakers poking through the bottom of Emhoff’s trousers – Saloman’s Racing Red Sneakers in Racing Red are a great dupe.

For something more subtle, opt for Alexander McQueen’s Oversize Sneakers with red contrast stitching.

Troye Sivan

Whilst people from all corners of the internet are debating whether Troye Sivan’s outfit was theme appropriate, no one can deny that he looked phenomenal.

He opted for a tight, black, maxi dress, with a revealing scoop neckline. The form-fitting dress was completed with a diamond neckband, a black leather armband and the highest of heels.

ST. AGNI’s Georgia Knitted Midi dress is strikingly akin to Sivan’s dress. It’s made from a soft cotton knit with fine spaghetti straps, a side slit and a square neckline.

Friend of Audrey’s Classic Black Singlet Dress offers a subtle alternative to the bold maxi length dress, finishing at the shin.

If you’re after total glitz and glamour, Versace’s Medusa Jersey Gown will certain satisfy your needs.

Add a pair of platform heels to complete the salute to Sivan’s Met Gala look. We love Nasty Gal’s Faux Leather Platform Heels with clear ankle straps.

Hunter Schafer

Fashion model and Euphoria actress, Hunter Schafer, put the extravagant and outrageous into this years Met Gala.

The futuristic, alien-like look was distinctively different from the other looks on the carpet.

Schafer’s two-piece attire was made by Prada. The straight skirt was a maxi length, sitting the hips and made entirely in a metallic leather-like fabric embellished with geometric crystals.

It was finished with a silver spider-like face piece and white contact lenses.

Schafer’s sci-fi look can be recreated with a matching silver, metallic or holographic set – of any sort!

SAKS POTTS’ Silver Shimmer Lissi Trousers and Saya Long Sleeve Shirt be donned separately for a striking look or individually to add some sparkle to any outfit.

In celebration of holographic garments, we are falling head over heels for Dolce & Gabbana’s Bustier Top. Pair it with tailored, white pants, wide leg jeans or a straight skirt for eye-catching outfit.
