Flared Yoga Pants Are The Quintessential Pandemic Trend
The Athleisure piece is finding a home on the fashion stage.
If there’s one fashion market that exploded into popularity during the pandemic, it’s comfort wear. From finding the perfect get-up to walk the dog or WFH, the comfort wear seeds were first sown with matching tracksuits. Next, boxer shorts and button ups crept into our outfit rotations, and before we knew it, yoga pants, or flared leggings as some know them, were back, and more versatile than ever. Here are three different ways to style flare yoga pants, for three different budgets.

Luxe
If Victoria’s Secret is the godmother of the OG yoga pants trend, the matriarch of its latest resurgence is none other than influencer sensation Emma Chamberlain. The YouTuber, and recent Met Gala attendee sent fans into a frenzy last year, when she posted an IG snap in a yoga pants and sweatshirt combo that optimised her relaxed, cool-girl style.
While our Luxe look typically showcases more opulent looks, we decided to take inspiration from Emma’s laissez-faire, Cali style with a casual day look.
Our Luxe look yoga pants come in the form of the Joseph wool-cashmere blend knitted high waist trousers. The subtle flare of this pant style elongates the legs, and sits just above floor length, perfect to showcase your sneakers, but not your odd socks.
Like the yoga pant, American sneaker brand New Balance has experienced quite the resurgence in the past few years, and their 550 design is being marked a staple by shoe lovers everywhere. This crisp Prada bowling shirt adds to the mellow tone of this outfit, while this floral linen Reformation top gives the outfit structure through a delicate sweetheart neckline and long spaghetti straps.
For accessories we’ve gone from the west coast to the east, where NYC street style is filled with colourful trucker hats and intricate beaded jewellery.

Less
Many consider fashion trends as a cyclical process, with styles going out of fashion and reappearing decades later as the flavour of the month. But I prefer to think of the trend cycle as more of an evolutionary process.
We last saw the yoga pant in the early 2000s, when it sat much lower on the waist, embellished by a thick fluoro fold-over waistband. Thankfully, those details didn’t travel with the trend, and today’s iteration of the flared legging focuses on high waists, split hems and distinctive cut-outs.
Taking notes from avant-garde labels like Jacquemus and Australia’s own Christopher Esber, our Less look is built around Missguided’s Strap Front Flares, reinvigorating the classic black flare with a flattering strap detailing on the waist.
To bring structure to the outfit, a pointed sweetheart corset, like Miaou’s iconic Leia top is an effortless combination for a night out. What’s best, the stretchy nature of the pants means you can dance the night away in both style and comfort!

While Emma Chamberlain is widely known to be responsible for the iconic yoga pant comeback, supermodel Kaia Gerber is also owed some recognition. Last year she collaborated with leisurewear brand Bleusalt to create the flattering Kaia Pant – a classic black flared yoga pant made from entirely sustainable materials.
There’s no doubt the young trendsetters put the classic black flared leggings back on the map, but since then, the scope of the trend has only grown. 2021 has provided the most bright and eclectic fashion landscapes in years, celebrating every maximalist and printed. And psychedelic swirls and colourful checkered prints have made their way onto the yoga pant too – for a true embodiment of the retro 70s bell bottom style.
For our Less look, we are showcasing the trending distorted check pattern, styled with a neutral colour palette. To complement the bold pants, a classic, structured shacket brings balance to the busy look. If you’re styling this look for a warmer climate, an oversized business shirt is a lightweight alternative.
We’ve chosen a tread sole boot to showcase the styling potential of the trend, but if you’d prefer to truly free your ankles, a pair of leggings with a split hem and some chunky sandals makes an equally stylish statement.
