Why Boxing Should Be Part of Your Wellness Routine
How boxing changed our Head of Community’s workout routine for the better, and all the gear to get you punching, stat!
Since my early twenties, my exercise of choice ebbed and flowed between Pilates and running. With the ever-changing locality of my share house, and the chill of a Victorian winter, sometimes these two sources of movement were a little trickier to participate in than I would have liked. Being a big believer in the necessity of an instructor to avoid injury alongside an even bigger need for the accountability of a class, I have often gravitated to group workouts and it’s what I need to maintain consistency.
In the small town I have well and truly established my roots for the moment, boxing was introduced to me at the local community gym. For me, boxing perfectly fuses a strenuous workout with a positive and healthy outlet to exert frustrations of daily life. One class and I was hooked (pun intended!).
Having now committed to 2 years of a weekly boxing class, I would consider myself a seasoned enthusiast and understand why so many (ahem Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss) have taken up, and fallen for this form of movement.
For me, one of the most necessary parts of this practice has been investing in the right gear to protect and support my body. After an injury to my right wrist early on, I invested in a pair of inner wrist gloves and have never looked back! These are worn underneath your padded boxing gloves and provide the important wrist and shock support you absolutely need to remain damage-free. This iteration from Nike, available at The Iconic are exactly what you should be looking for.
For everything else, your regular running or Pilates activewear more than suffices! I’m currently loving the new hues in Nike’s Training line and am a fan of anything Girlfriend Collective make. When it comes to the quintessential boxing gloves, I’m yet to find the perfect ones for me, but you better believe these Black & Off-White Pro Leather Boxing Gloves by Modest Vintage Player will be in my next SSENSE order.
If the challenge of coordination, partnered work and a full body workout are something that excite you, I cannot recommend boxing enough.
