Siri, Set Me a Reminder to go for a Hike

This season we’re making a case for the hot girl hike, just like the hot girl walk but a little more off the beaten track.

If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that nature possess a healing and calming power that is unlike anything else. Throughout the many lockdowns of 2020 and beyond, walks were one of the only permitted reasons to head outdoors or meet up with a friend.

Now that restrictions for travel have well and truly been dismantled, we think it’s time you took your walking to the next level and go for a hike. The difference between a walk and a hike? Well, the action is the same, but the location and the distance is where these two activities differ.

Here in Australia, its spring, and in my opinion, one of the best times to head outdoors for a walk amongst nature, as both our native flora and fauna are really showing off. If you’re located in the southern part of the country like me, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to tracks, trails and hikes splattered throughout our national parks and coastal reserves. Some favourites of mine are Grampians National Park, The Otways, Lerderderg National Park (which isn’t too far from the city) and of course, the Dandenong ranges.

If you’re looking to take up hiking and walk further distances into remote locations, your choice of gear is exceptionally important. It goes without saying that your footwear selection is not only crucial, but really where you should start.

Gone are the days where hiking footwear is daggy and unfashionable, thanks to brands like the North Face and even Proenza Schouler, supportive and chic can coexist in this subcategory of shoes.

If you’re attempting a walk that exceeds an hour, you best consider the best way to keep hydration levels up! Personally, I favour an insulated water bottle, like the options available from The Iconic below, placed into a supportive backpack. If you’re a little more serious about distance and speed, a built in hydration pack like the Saloman Pro 10 Set will keep you watered like a pro.

Oh and no matter the weather forecast, a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses are non-negotiables to protect your precious skin and noggin! The North Face make headwear that is the perfect balance of protection and performance.
