Refillable Beauty Products That Will Make Your Bathroom Shelf More Sustainable

Recharge and refill. Your favourite beauty products in refillable form, that you probably didn’t even know about.

While not as landfill-contributing as the clothing we wear on our backs, the cosmetic and beauty industry make up for a substantial amount of post-consumer waste. In 2019, Forbes reported in the article New Ways The Beauty Industry Is Testing Sustainable Practices that in excess of 120 billion units of packaging are produced globally every year by the beauty industry, contributing to a loss of 18 million acres of forest annually.

Packaging heavy and plastic dependant, our beauty rituals, unfortunately, come at a cost of the planet, and we, as consumers, must constantly challenge that.

The refillable beauty scene, whilst not especially revolutionary, is helping to produce less waste, fewer carbon emissions and pass on the savings of less packaging to the consumer.

Basically, the system works by the consumer purchasing the first product which has the capacity to be refilled. Post exhausting the first round of formulation, the original packaging is used as a shell to house top-ups of product that can be bought in bulk.

Skincare, makeup, household items, haircare and personal care categories have embraced the refillable movement. We are so happy to report that consumers are spoilt for choice when it comes to products with options to buy in bulk, less packaging required, refills.

Think this function is seldom geared toward eco-beauty brands? Think again. Giants, belonging to the luxury and budget markets have all jumped on board. Ouai Hair, Dermatologica, Fenty and Guerlian have all built an impressive refillable offering for their cult products.

Whether you’re looking at switching to a product because it offers less-waste-conducing refills or buying bulk top-ups for one of your rides or die, we’re sure there is something for you in our edit below.

Not finding your usual products featured here? Here’s a tip, simply head to your favourite beauty retailers and type refill into the search function, you will be surprised at all the options that ensue.
