Margiela’s eponymous shoe, the split toed Tabi boot, is about as iconic as it gets.

Debuting in 1988, the Tabi shoe is inspired by traditional Japanese socks that separate the big toe from the rest of the toes.

The Belgian designer wanted to recreate this distinctive hoof footprint and thus the Tabi was born, albeit with a Margiela twist.

What began as a single boot style has morphed into an expanse of styles and sizes. Now, Margiela Tabi’s come in all different heel heights, from slippers, to stilettos, and you’ll even find Tabi mary-janes, loafers, derby shoes, and even ballerina flats.

Margiela has also slipped into the world of sneakers with iconic collaborations, including their most recent with Reebok.
