Cult Edit: Silver Chains

The humble silver chain that adorns Normal People’s Connell Waldron’s neck has caused waves across the internet.

During a time of world-wide isolation, the thrill of finding new and fresh shows to binge on streaming platforms is about as exciting as the iso-scene gets. The television adaption of Sally Rooney’s novel Normal People, has not only gained mass media attention for being a fantastic ready-to-watch series, but it has also unintentionally sparked a new appreciation for men’s jewellery, the current hot topic of today’s internet discourse.

Since the release of Normal People, Connell’s chain has made quite an impact on audiences. Normalising men’s jewellery once again, Connell’s thin silver chain has been dubbed THE most subtly sexy male accessory that 2020 has to offer.

And like everything that receives mass attention from the internet, an Instagram page has been made to bring together like-minded fans. The page in question isn’t in honour of the show, or even the main character and teen heartthrob Connell. But instead, is dedicated to appreciating the chain. Yes, that’s right. @connellschain is solely about the thin piece of metal that hangs around Normal People actor, Paul Mescal’s neck. Think it’s only us going chain crazy? Well, that makes us and 184,000 others, which is the total number of Instagram users currently following the page.

So, what is it about Connell’s chain that is so endearing? The humble chain necklace is not necessarily a new phenomenon. And in fact, the often-over-looked classic chain has had waves of popularity over the decades, with many men’s retailers selling out of the humble silver chain.
