2022’s Obsession with the Balaclava

One of the most unlikely trend to come out of last year was the ski mask and homemade hood trend. We’re excited to see how this one blows up in the Southern Hemisphere.

Almost inspired by our use of face masks over the past couple of years, balaclavas of all shapes and sizes are this year’s unlikely trend hero.

Originally designed and intended for cold snowy climates to keep your face nice and toasty, the style has been largely associated with the idea of criminals.

Thanks to TikTok, the classic design is undergoing a major revival.

Straying from its roots, people have begun crafting their own balaclavas from thick, colourful wool and pairing them with fun patterns and outrageous coats.

With some styles totally covering your face and only leaving your eyes, and others that function as more of a hood – balaclavas are easier than ever before to style into your existing outfits.

In addition to being stylish, the balaclava can also have a sporty function.

Some of the options on the market have this function in mind and are designed using quick drying and lightweight materials to help you run, ski or snowboard in any climate.

As it’s definitely more suited to a cooler climate, we may have to wait a couple of months before we can start making and wearing our own.
