Josephine Esther Mentzer was born in New York City, the daughter of Hungarian immigrants who referred to her as ‘Esty’, later expanded to ‘Estee’. She started Estee Lauder with her husband Joseph in 1946, initially carrying only four products; Cleansing Oil, Skin Lotion, Super Rich All purpose Crème and Crème Pack. Two years later, the couple opened their first department store account at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. In 1960 the company went international – first to London, then Hong Kong and along the way added Aramis fragrances for men, followed by skincare icon Clinique and many others. In just over half a century, the Estee Lauder name has forever been etched into the landscape of global beauty.
