4 Essential Summer Hat Styles Every Guy Needs

Keep one by your front door and one in the car, this season we’re wearing our hats everywhere.

Not only can a hat be a stylish accessory, but they serve a practical purpose too. Hats are the best way to keep the sun off your scalp, saving you from sunburn. Whether you’re one to sling your cap to the back to keep the sun off your neck or someone who likes to tip their hat to a passer-by, we’ve detailed our favourite hats for this summer.

The Cap

Usually used for sporting and informal settings, the cap is a men’s headwear classic. Every man should have at least one cap at his disposal.

Usually made of cotton, caps fit comfortably on the head with enough breathability for summer. The front visor will keep the sun out of your eyes or reverse it and the back of your neck will be protected.

The Balenciaga language logo-embroidered cap is the perfect example of a luxury fashion house subtly lifting a staple into high-fashion.

Inspired by airport arrival welcome signs, the Balenciaga cap has the house’s logo embroidered in seven multicoloured languages on the front.

It’s made from panelled cotton twill, with traditional cap elements such as embroidered eyelets and a Velcro strap at the back.

The Straw Hat

Lightweight, timeless, and practical, the straw hat is an obvious summer go-to. Straw hats have been utilised by men and women across the world for centuries.

The lightness of straw makes it a comfortable material to wear in the summer, and the weave provides ventilation, comfort, and a healthy level of sun protection.

There are many types of straw hats, from boaters and Panamas to life-guard-inspired with a chin strap.

Country Road’s classic Panama hat makes itself known during the warmer months as a staple of the iconic Australian brand.

The Country Road Panama is made from paper and has a navy cotton hat band, which adds stylistic integrity. With cotton from the Better Cotton Initiative, there’s nothing to feel bad about in a hat this good.

The Felt Hat

If you’re in the market for a hat you can wear all year round, a felt or woollen hat is perfect for you. You can wear it in during summer and come winter you’ll be struggling to find a reason to take it off.

While felt or wool might feel a bit stuffy for a heatwave, these hats provide excellent sun protection and maximum style regardless of the weather.

With a felt hat, you can choose more of a fedora style or you can branch out into the world of the wide brim.

Australia’s most iconic hat is the Akubra. Founded in 1874 in Tasmania, the brand has been making top-quality hats for over 140 years.

Combining purpose and style, the Akubra Cattleman Hat is a classic silhouette for the brand. Found in both the outback and cities alike, this is one multifunctional hat.

The Bucket Hat

Bucket hats seem to have well-and-truly set up home in the sartorial zeitgeist, and we couldn’t be happier. Especially when the styles are this fresh.

Since the 1960’s the bucket hat has been sneaking its way in and out of both street style and runways. With a wide, downward-sloping brim, it’s the perfect hat to keep the sun out of your eyes and off your neck all at the same time.

It’s become especially popular as a fashion staple for festivals and outdoor music venues. And fashion houses have noticed, consistently coming out with bold statement hats perfect for these occasions.

JW Anderson’s asymmetric bucket hat is made of recycled canvas and consists of deconstructed panels and trailing logo-print tabs. It’s the perfect mix of utilitarian and high fashion for any occasion.
